can online dating services create a profile without your consent?

I found 3 profiles of a friend of mines on three different online dating servces.some adult only…he says he never registered but even his user name and password are one he has used on other websites in the past, he chalks this up to phishing. is this possible?
thank you for the answer. what if i’ve also found temp internet files and "cookies" on the hard drive of my computer linked to these websites? Can that just be spam or pop ups. there are hundreds.

    Yes they can. Online dating services can go through myspace or other social networks and use the pic to create a profile. Match.com and Yahoo personal are both going to court for this reason. Online dating is a scam. I’m not sure why online dating is popular, I tried it and hated it. I will never do it again.

    Don’t give up on line, just scams. I met my wife on Usenet. I know someone who met a lady here on YA – and it looks like the wedding will be next June.

    Possibly, depending on the online dating site in question. Some are a bit dodgy.
